After initially joining Guyan & Associates in 2008, Michael took time out to simultaneously raise his young son and complete an Open University degree, before returning in October 2013.

Prior to M&E recruitment, Michael cut his teeth resourcing recruitment consultants – which he describes as an eye-opening experience! This opportunity allowed Michael to see both the good and bad qualities in recruitment consultants – and, ultimately, led him to turn his back on the stereotypical view and take the right approach to recruitment.

A proud, life-long, Manchester United fan, Michael is looking forward to seeing them return to the top of the league! He spends most of his spare time having fun with his family and he’s happy his son is slowly coming round to the idea of being a Red Devils supporter.

Job Description


An exciting requirement has come in for a Surveying Director to join an ever expanding M&E Contractor. Working closely with the Commercial Director, reporting into the Managing Director, you will have full day to day repsonsibility for the Commercial / QS teams. This role will be focusing more on the Operational elements of Commercial Management.

Job title: Surveying Director

You will be directly responsible for managing the Commercial team on a day to day basis whilst the Commercial Director will remain focused on the contractual side of the role.

The successful person will ensure they are able to support the business in a time of growth to deliver the business objectives whilst at the same time developing a sustainable Commercial Strategy with the support of the Commercial Director and Managing Director. We are therefore looking for someone who has a proven track record ideally within the M&E industry and is able to come into a growing business and implement positive change where required.

The role would suit someone that is keen to develop their career in a growing organisation. We are therefore looking for someone who is bright, enthusiastic and is looking for a challenge.

The successful person will be extremely diligent and have a proven track record in agreeing final accounts with clients. The ability to build relationships effectively with both the commercial team and external clients/suppliers is essential.

Duties & Responsibilities: As the Surveying Director your duties and responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Manage and nurture excellent client relationship's at both senior level and project level
  • Driving the change and programme management process
  • Ensuring you are able to protect the business in terms of mitigating risk and maximising opportunities in regards to client delays
  • Ensuring that the subcontractor administration process is proactively managed
  • Managing the commercial teams on a day to day basis
  • Driving both the operational and commercial teams to follow process, checking quality where required
  • Managing project cash flow
  • Delivering business revenue targets
  • Driving agreement of time and costs in relation to project changes
  • Ensuring appropriate site records are maintained
  • Ensuring compliance with a robust order process fully aligned with the Procurement department
  • Delivering accurate weekly/monthly financial reporting
  • Ensuring the relevant teams are managing labour and productivity forecasts in an efficient manner
  • Maximising opportunities ensuring variations, and are accounts submitted early with relevant detail to substantiate claims
  • Working with the commercial teams to ensure they are prepared for their monthly contract review meetings
  • Providing sound understanding of principle entitlement in regards to the change process
  • Administering up stream contracts to ensure that the company position is protected at all times
  • Ensuring robust processes are in place to monitor, review and control project budgets
  • Advising on improvements to the management systems in place, including working part of the project implementation team for the upgrade of our IT systems.
  • Any other duties that maybe required to support the future growth of the department


Qualifications & Skills required:

  • Ideally qualified with either a Mechanical / Electrical qualification or Commercial Management / Quantity Surveying.
  • Previous working experience within an M&E Contractor or Quantity Surveying practice.
  • Eligible to live and work in the UK with a valid drivers license.
