Assistant Quantity Surveyor

Job Description


To control all commercial aspects of contracts from initial order to final account relative to their commercial performance. To provide detailed financial reporting in accordance with company procedures. 
Overview / Responsibilities:

  • The Surveyor is responsible for the following tasks, some of which they will implement directly and others will be delegated
  • Plan, organise and manage the activities associated with the surveying of projects allocated to you and agree resources required
  • Analyse, identify and be aware of the conditions of contract and ensure compliance with them and keep the Project Manager / Engineer advised of the obligations
  • Ensure safe receipt and special filing of all contract documents, bonds, warranties, parent company guarantees, etc
  • Issue sub-contract orders and take responsibility for ensuring that all commercial and contractual aspects are satisfactorily considered and implemented

Provide detailed financial information on all financial aspects of a contract in liaison with the following:


  • Project Manager / Engineer, Installation Supervisor / Foreman, Buying and Accounts Departments
  • Prepare and submit, in liaison with other members of staff, regular applications / invoices for works carried out and ensure payments are received in accordance with the contract requirements and dates
  • Obtain and review all information to establish and prepare, in liaison with other members of staff, sub-contractor payments and advise the accounts department of correct payment dates
  • Fully identify the cost of any contract variations including overheads, non-productive and disruptive elements and ensure that they are submitted satisfactorily to achieve proper remuneration and maintenance of profits
  • Analyse monthly, in conjunction with the Project Manager / Engineer, the Contract performance in progress and value / cost terms and reconcile financial performance including projections for contract completion
  • Carry out monthly contract review meetings and ensure that minutes of said meetings are issued promptly detailing necessary action points
  • Ensure that direct charges to clients, sub-contractors and suppliers are properly submitted and that contra charges received from them are diligently processed
  • Prepare, in liaison with the Directors, claims for prolongation, delay & disruption and / or loss and expense
  • Ensure that the company is not exposed to risk via claims received from sub-contractors or suppliers
  • Liaise regularly with the client’s project management team / surveying staff
  • Prepare and negotiate with the client and / or sub-contractors a final account which should include measured work, direct works and contract charges
  • Recommend to the Commercial Director any proposed agreements / settlements and obtain approval as necessary
  • Provide support to the estimating department with regards to contractual and commercial issues associated with tender returns
  • Ensure that all quality assurance procedures associated with the duties above are complied with at all time and all paperwork is correctly completed and issued
